The Normal City Council recently approved a site plan and zoning change for the new Illinois Art Station educational building.
The nonprofit arts organization began teaching children at the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal in 2018.
The vote to rezone the building resulted in a 5-1 decision at Monday’s council meeting. The site plan was approved unanimously 6-0.
The council purchased properties at 101 E. Vernon Ave. and at 605 and 607 S. Linden Streets. The spaces were previously used as single family residences and will now be used as studios.
This is the first permanent location that the IAS will have. IAS expects to cover all costs for the new permanent space.
IAS plans to add a 13-space parking lot to properties at 605 and 607 S. Linden Streets. IAS also plans to retain all possible plants in front of and around the building and to add sculptures and paintings to the exterior of the building.
